PMA Member - Pilates Method Alliance

Mission Statement
The Pilates Method Alliance is the international not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Joseph H. and Clara Pilates. The PMA maintains the highest standards for education and information.

Goals

bulletEstablish and maintain a national achievement exam.
bulletEncourage professional growth through continuing education.
bulletDefine the parameters of Pilates teaching and expertise.
bulletRespect various approaches to the Pilates method.
bulletPromote the image knowledge and understanding of the Pilates method of exercise.
bulletServe as a Pilates information resource.
bulletEncourage feedback and evaluate our organization to meet the needs of the community we serve.

Philosophy
The Pilates Method is a movement technique which requires an internal physical transformation and integration of mind and body. In order to be a teacher, one must experience it (the transformation) first, understanding that it's never complete but a constant evolution of learning.

Training/Education
The PMA recommends that anyone wishing to teach the Pilates method of exercise attend a comprehensive training program, and maintain a commitment to education. A comprehensively trained teacher must have practical knowledge of the complete exercise system, including its philosophy and purpose, the primary goal of each exercise, and an ability to modify the exercises without losing their main intent. He/She must be able to accurately assess a client's posture and movement patterns, understand what the client is doing in a session, and build an appropriate, client- specific program. He /She must also be able to pace the work out for an effective movement experience, communicate specific, applicable corrections, and use appropriate hands on ability.
